Who actually decants wine in this day and age?, January 26, 2010

"Anyone who wants the best from their wine should. Decanting wines is not just for show, and even in this modern age of industrial, fined and filtered wines, some reds will still benefit from spending some time in a decanter. For young red wines, splash the wine into the decanter. The more it splashes into the decanter, the more it comes in contact with oxygen, bringing out the winemakers vision of his vintage. For old wines with sediment one needs to be very diligent about pouring the wine into a decanter. First, stand the bottle up for several hours to allow the sediment to settle at the bottom, pouring slowly and carefully while watching the neck for sediment. This particular decanter has given me years of service, and has brought joy to many family occasions, holidays, and vintages."
